Rehearsals: Mondays 6:30 – 8:45 p.m.
Location: Brookfield High School Music Room
Session Date: TBD once COVID restrictions are lifted
Band Leader: Cathy Wilcox
Have you ever wanted to play the music of the jazz giants – Miles, Bird, Duke, Monk and more? This is an introductory-level jazz band for musicians who have completed at least one year with Bytown Beginners, or who are comfortable with their instruments and who would like to learn about playing jazz rhythms while learning to play big band and other jazz styles. Please Note: Musicians should be comfortable playing most of the music in the Essential Elements Book 1. Piano at a level of grade 8 conservatory is recommended for joining on piano; one pianist is ideal. Electric guitar and bass guitar also should have a solid foundation on their instruments. A steady sense of beat and basic drum kit experience and reading music are necessary for playing the kit. Auxiliary percussion (tambourine, shaker, bongos, cow bell) is important for keeping the band together. Vibes parts often double the piano, but occasionally are featured in solos. Two to three percussionists who are ready to work as a team is ideal.
This is your chance to swing, bop, and “jump in” to jazz!
Every rehearsal is two hours long plus a short social break. Most weeks there will be a full band rehearsal, but in weeks 3-6 there may be a one-hour instrument-specific clinic, some sectional groupings or a surprise guest conductor. At the end-of-session concert, the band performs music ranging from big band to Motown to contemporary pop jazz stylings.
We will use the book, First Place for Jazz (Dean Sorenson). The resource “Best of Easy Jazz” published by Hal Leonard is recommended for purchase as a second resource.
Instrument choices: Flute, Clarinet, Alto Saxophone, Tenor Saxophone, Baritone Saxophone, Trumpet, French Horn, Trombone, Euphonium/Baritone, Electric/Acoustic Bass, Electric Guitar, Drum Kit, Auxilliary-Vibes, Piano. Other instruments may be accepted pending band leader approval.
