Week 8 update for November 15, 2018

Greetings Capital Crescendos,

Theme of the Week:Time to vote! We are ready to decide which pieces we would like to play at our end of session concert on December 16. Shortly you will receive another email asking you to select the three pieces you would like to play at our concert. Please “reply all” then rank your top three choices. This way both Sheila and Leslie will receive your vote.

Administration:Thank you to David (clarinet) and Gail (flute) for this week’s cookies. We should now have enough cookies for the next few weeks.

This Week’s Rehearsal:

We opened this week’s rehearsal with a wonderful performance by our percussionist Brenda on her bagpipes. It was fabulous.

We started our practice with Ode to Joy, a great way to warm up. Remember to raise your instrument when Sheila raises her hands and to keep your instrument in playing position until she lowers her hands. Next we worked on Scottish Ballade, paying attention to the dynamics especially at bar 13 (p for piano, meaning softly). We then played the E♭ scale and arpeggio. Next we worked on The Magnificent Seven, ironing out various sections and focussing on the introduction. At bar 11 drop to forte. We then worked on Flourish, noting there is no ritardando (slowing down) at the end. We tried two variations for the last three bars and decided on a fortepiano (playing loudly then suddenly dropping to softly) at the beginning of both bar 78 and 79. Our next piece was Autumn Rains, with bar 55 dropping to ppp (pianississimo or very very softly). We then turned to Jazzoo, remembering to keep moving forward at bar 9. We ended with Dona Nobis Pacem and King’s Row.

Next Rehearsal
Please continue to bring Broadway Favorites and Tradition of Exellence 2 to our rehearsals. Next week, we will look at La La Land, Magnificent Seven, Flourish, Cabaret and 76 Trombones
