Capital Crescendos Notes for March 7, week 7
Warming Up
A great way to warm up is to start with easy tunes you are comfortable playing such as those found in Broadway Favourites. Remember your posture: stand up and ensure you are feeling balanced, standing on both feet. Then sit down, keeping your feet in their same position (both feet still on the floor). Also, keep up the breathing exercises. We reviewed the 1-2 breathing exercises. ex. breathe in slowly for 4 beats, then breathe out slowly for 8 beats without your instrument, and also while playing concert Bb on your instrument. This is an excellent exercise for everyone, even those not playing wind instruments.
Cabaret
Took it in 2/2 time.
At bar 7 – mp except cabinets and alto saxes.
At bar 24, make sure we hear the low brass which has the melody.
Washington Post
Note key changes at bar 31, 35 and 59.
First time through the repeats at bar 9 and 26, play p. The second time though play f. It is the change in dynamics that makes the piece interesting.
At bar 28, there is a crescendo within the bar, so start the bar at p and increase to f by the end of it.
Willow Tree
Bar 38 – remember the key change but don’t slow down.
At bar 33 – remember the rit.
At bar 44 there is a tenuto on the first beat.
At bar 45, make sure to keep it at tempo.
At bar 50, watch the conductor for the entry.
Get me to the Church
Tried it in both 2/2 and 4/4 time.
Best of Queen
At bar 51, the fermata is on the rest for everyone except percussion.
At bar 52, Sheila will take it in 1 rather than 3/4.
At bar 117, Sheila will take it in 3/4.
At bar 119, note the fp. Start at f, drop it to p then build back up to f.
The Entertainer
Work on the articulation and getting the dynamics and the articulation together. It should be a lazy feel. This piece features call and response – back and forth.
Next Rehearsal – 1st hour is sectionals; Review all the pieces we have looked at this session.
