Week 11 update from November 30, 2017

Greetings Capital Crescendos,

Theme of the Week: Dynamics: . We’ve mastered the notes. Now we need to focus on dynamics – from pianissimo (pp) all the way to fortissimo (ff) and back again. Remember to start softly when embarking on a crescendo to maximize the impact.

Administration and Social:

Our social committee has organized a brunch-before-band next week, December 7, at 11:00 at Kristy’s which is located at 809 Richmond Rd. Hope to see everyone there.

Our community concert will take place on December 14 in the afternoon at Woodroffe Elementary School. Sheila will provide us with our program for the concert next Thursday.

End of Session Concert:

Our end of session concert is on December 10th at 2:00PM at Brookfield High School. Please note this is an hour earlier than our usual concert start time.

The pieces we will be playing are, in order: Celebrating My Three Best Friends, Angel, Riu Riu Chiu and West Side Story.

We will be warming up at 1:00 at Brookfield High School. Plan to arrive at 12:45 to be ready to start warming up together at 1:00. While we won’t need our stands on stage, we’ll need them for the warm up. We can leave our stands, cases and coats in the library but do not leave any valuables in the room as it will NOT be locked.

Following the concert, there will be a reception in the lobby at Brookfield. To thank our audience we like to offer them some snacks and refreshments and appreciate contributions from all of us. Everyone is invited to bring contributions of finger food such as cookies or squares, cut up vegetables and fruit and non alcoholic drinks such as fruit juice. Homemade and packaged goodies are both acceptable.

This Week’s Rehearsal

We started rehearsal this week with our final sectionals/clinics. Following our break we worked on West Side Story which is sounding terrific. Watch the dynamics especially the piano and pianissimo markings. We ran through Happy which we’ll play for our finale at our community concert. Watch the staccatos to keep the piece light. We’ll play it through twice: from bar 1 straight through to the end (D.S. al fine) then return to bar 18 and again play through to the end (D.S. al fine) the return to bar 18 and play to bar 32 (Fine). We then worked on Angel which Sheila said was the best-ever run through. Keep listening to the link and remember to watch the dynamic markings. Finally we worked on Riu, Riu, Chiu which Sheila said is also sounding better than ever.

Next Week’s Rehearsal

Next week will be our “dress rehearsal”. We’ll play through all our end of session concert pieces plus some of our community concert pieces.
