Greetings Capital Crescendoes
Hot off the press! Our end of session concert will take place on Monday December 17 at 1:00 at Severn Public School. More details at this week’s practice.
Theme of the Week: Listen, listen, listen and Sing, sing, sing! Make sure to continue to get to know our concert pieces. Incorporate the melodies and the rhythms. Sing them – to yourself, to your dog/cat, when you are out for a walk – and continue to listen to the links below. AND remember to practice any sections that you find challenging by playing confidently at a SLOWER tempo.
Administration: Registration for next term for returning musicians opens on December 1. A number of the bands are close to capacity so make sure to register early. Registration for new members will start on December 11. Registration information and instructions are on the ONHB site https://ottawanewhorizons.com
A sign up sheet will be available at band next week for the end of session concert on December 16. Please help by bringing some finger food (ready to be served), some juice or soft drinks, some fruit or cheese or some cookies or squares. Volunteers are needed to help with the food or to help on stage.
Social Activities: Following our rehearsal on December 6, there will be a gathering at The Colonnade on Carling St, just across from the Carlingwood Shopping Centre. Their specialty is pizza. All are welcome. Our gatherings are great opportunities to get to know those musicians playing other instruments.
This Week’s Rehearsal: We started this week’s rehearsal with our final sectionals for the December 16th concert. We then moved into full rehearsal, warmed up with the B♭concert scale on its own and then we learned a round which is based on the notes from the Bb scale. Then we practised our breathing exercise which is great for everyone, including percussion and basses. Breathe in for four beats and out for eight. Next we worked on Magnificent Seven which we’ll be playing at ♩=126 and focussed on some of the challenging parts. Try practising under tempo and work on playing confidently. At bar 31, the low brass has the melody so make sure they can be heard. At bar 124 start to build the crescendo slowly. Then we worked on King’s Row which we’ll be playing at ♩=96. Treat the second last bar, bar 96, as a sforzando. And finally we played Jazzoo, partly without our conductor and it still sounded great – an excellent demonstration of how well everyone is listening to each other and playing as an ensemble. Remember to start it with a firm entry.
Next Rehearsal We will continue to polish our pieces for the Dec 16th concert. In addition, we will work on the rest of our repertoire as we develop our program for the school concert. For those of you who have already played “Happy” with CC Band in the past, please bring it along to rehearsal next week. If you do not have a copy, let us know so that we can prepare any extra copies that may be needed.
Thanks to Lesia (French horn) for some entertainment.
