Week 1 update for September 20, 2018

Greetings Capital Crescendos,

Theme of the Week: ” The band that breathes together plays together!” Remember to watch the conductor’s baton for changes in tempo so we can all stay together.

Administration:

Sheila warmly welcomed the members of the Capital Crescendoes. She introduced the band rep (Leslie – bass guitar), members of the Board of Directors (Steve – trumpet, David – trombone, Leslie – bass guitar), the music librarian and assistant (Charlotte – flute, Gail – flute) and the social committee (Kathryn – French horn, Steve – trumpet).

Band rehearsal starts at 12:45 and runs to 3:00, with a short break in the middle. We have access to our rehearsal hall from 12:15. A big thank you to those who arrive early and help with the chairs and percussion and to those who stay after and help put things away. Our sectionals will start next week.  Please note we have access to sectional rooms starting at 12:30.

We will be using Tradition of Excellence Book 2 as our method book.  It is an excellent reference tool.  Also we will be using Broadway Favorites for additional musical selections. Both these books are available at St. John’s Music with a discount for ONHB members.

A gentle reminder that our break is a great time to socialize and stretch our legs and to take a break from playing.  Please refrain from playing your instrument during the break.

Thank you to Sheila who provided our cookies this past week.  If anyone would be prepared to provide cookies for one of our breaks, please let Leslie (lesliescott789@gmail.com) know.

At the end of our session we will be performing in a community concert on a Thursday afternoon.  If you have any suggestions for a venue, please let Leslie (lesliescott789@gmail.com) know.

A sax ligature was left behind at rehearsal.  Leslie will bring it to our next rehearsal.

This Week’s Rehearsal:

We started our rehearsal with the B♭ scale, played together, and in a number of variations, focusing on watching the conductor, listening to others and breathing together. We then worked on Flourish, making sure to watch the conductor for the tempo at bar 63 and avoiding the tendency to slow down following the legato sections.  Next we worked on Scottish Ballad, again watching Sheila for changes in tempo. La La Land was our next piece which Sheila took at a reduced tempo and in 4/4. We finished our rehearsal with Autumn Rain and King’s Row, a British march.

Next Week’s rehearsal:

We will start next week’s rehearsal with sectionals. Room numbers will be posted at the church.
Both sectionals and full rehearsal will focus on KIng’s Row, Scottish Ballad and La La Land.   In addition we will play the concert B♭ scale without referring to any music.

Important Dates

Thursday October 18:  No rehearsal
Sunday December 15 afternoon:  ONHB Seasonal concert at Brookfield High School
