Warm – Up
Bazaar Scale and Motive Study Sheet
- Scales – use scale to practice articulation – legato, staccato, switch accent on different notes in the bar. Ex. accent the first note in each bar. Switch things around.
2a. Motive Exercise -loop the first two bars – focus on slurs (steady exhale and no tonguing) then accent the half note.
2b. Motive Exercise – loop the third and fourth bar- focus on rhythm first – then add the accents. Singing rhythms before you play is always good.
Repertoire
Bazaar
Ending – looped the last two bars and focused on rhythms and then articulation. Close your eyes and play to get a better feel.
Run Through – well done with an applause to the percussion section.
Things to work on:
This pieces need to be very deliberate and precise in the rhythm – practice at a slower speed to get this down. Then add the accents. Be strong not loud, and crisp. Increasing the tempo comes last.
Salute to Louis Armstrong
Over all impression is a lazy swing feel. This jazzy easy going impression disguises a very disciplined music form. Swing eight notes are played – long – short.
Staggered breathing may need to be worked out in certain sections. Ex. clarinets
Bar 14 – Bluesy March and more laid back.
Bar 21 – work on the rhythm then articulation – more important to slow down and be correct before speeding up. Off the face techniques – clap, sing, air patterns.
Bar 30 – second half note will have a fermata – Look at Sheila
Bar 63 – be prepared to pick up the tempo – 132
